What does a marketing agency actually do each month?

In a typical month an agency like ours films or photographs your work, then writes and schedules posts from what it shot. It answers comments and messages, checks any paid ads and sends you a report.

In short

  • A filming or photo day, then posts made from it over the following weeks. We agree the number of days and posts with you.
  • You approve a plan, answer a few questions and read the report when it arrives. After the first month it asks little of you.
  • Expect posts in the first few weeks and a report after the first full month. Judge the results after three to six months.

Here is a month for a business with one filming or photo day in it. Some have more days and some fewer, depending on the trade and the season.

The shoot. One of our videographers or photographers comes to you for a morning on site or a few hours in the kitchen before service. They film the trades at work, or the dining room before it fills. The footage is cut into short clips, and the photos are edited, over the following week or two.

The plan. Before anything is posted, we write a list of the posts for the coming weeks and send it to you to check. Each one has the clip or photo, the words, the platform and the date. This is the moment to say a job is under a confidentiality agreement, or that a face should not be shown.

Posting. The approved posts go into a scheduling tool and go out on the agreed days. Across the client accounts we run, that was more than 15,000 posts between 1 January and 31 August 2026.

Replies. Comments and messages get answered, and spam is removed without bothering you. A question about a house you're building or a table booking comes straight to you. Decide at the start what gets forwarded and how quickly, because this is where enquiries first appear.

Ads. If you're running paid ads, someone checks them during the month. They look at the spend and what each enquiry is costing. The budget, and who the ads are shown to, get adjusted as the month goes on.

The report. At the end of each month, or each quarter if that is what we agreed, you get a report. Ours shows how many times your posts were seen, which posts did best and what we plan to change.

For July 2026 we sent 47 client reports.

What do I have to do as the owner?

Not much, once things are running. Some things only you can do, though, and the months that go well are the ones where the owner does them.

  • Turn up for the shoot, or send someone who knows the job. Our photographers can find the angles, but only you know the steel going in on Tuesday is the interesting bit.
  • Approve the plan within a few days. A quick yes keeps the whole month on schedule.
  • Answer the questions. A good agency will ask what's coming up and what you're proud of. A short call gives us most of what we need for the weeks ahead.
  • Pass enquiries back. If a message we forwarded turned into a job, tell us. It is the only way anyone learns which posts bring work.
  • Read the report whenever one arrives. Ask about anything that doesn't make sense.

None of that takes long. The first month is slower, because we're learning your business and you're learning what to send us.

What should I expect to see, and by when?

Roughly this. The exact timing varies.

  • Week one. A call or a visit to agree what you want from it and which platforms make sense. Access sorted for your social accounts and any ad accounts.
  • Weeks two to four. The first shoot, then a plan for you to approve. Posts start going out and your feed starts to fill.
  • After the first full month. Your first report. It sets the baseline, which means the numbers you'll judge later months against.
  • Months two and three. Posts settle into a routine. Replies get quicker because we now know the answers. Ads, if you run them, have data behind them.
  • Months three to six. This is when you can judge it. Enough has gone out to see what your audience responds to.

Sometimes the first posts wait for a site to reach a stage worth filming. When that is the plan we tell you, so you know what is coming and when.

On a building job the timing matters. A builder in Leeds with a house finishing in October 2026 should book the shoot before the scaffolding comes down. Once it's down, there is much less to film.

How do I tell if it is working?

Three signs, in order of how much they matter.

Enquiries mention the posts. Someone rings and says they saw the loft conversion video, or an estate agent you work with says your Instagram looks busy. Keep a note of these. It is the best evidence you'll get.

The report numbers move over months. Look at how many times the posts were seen, and how many people commented or sent a message. Don't read much into one month. Three months in a row moving up is a good sign, and every report says what we plan to change next.

You know what's going out. With a plan you approved and a report each month, you can say what went out last week without looking it up.

Follower counts on their own are a poor guide. Look for a report that explains what sits under each number.

You can see the kind of work a month like this produces on our clients page. The shoot side is on our videography and photography pages. Our social media management and paid ads pages explain how the posting and ads run.

If you're thinking of hiring an agency, four things you could do this week:

  1. Write down what you want, such as more enquiries for extensions in North Leeds. More followers is too vague to work from.
  2. Pick one job or one venue you'd be happy to have filmed in the next month.
  3. Ask to see a sample monthly report and a sample plan. We are happy to show you both.
  4. Decide who at your end we deal with. Name one person.

Common questions

How much time does a marketing agency need from me each month?

A marketing agency needs very little of your time once things are running. You turn up for the shoot, approve the plan, answer a few questions and read the report. Allow more in the first month while the agency gets to know your business.

What is in a monthly marketing report?

A monthly marketing report shows how many times your posts were seen and which posts did best. It says what the agency plans to change next month, and why. If you run ads, it shows what each enquiry cost.

How long before a marketing agency shows results?

Posts appear in the first month. A fair judgement takes three to six months, when there is enough out there to compare. Your first report sets the baseline that later months are measured against.

What is a content day?

A content day is a day, or a morning, when our videographers or photographers film your work in person. The clips and photos from it are cut into posts over the following weeks. How often you have one depends on the business.

Do I need to be on every platform?

No. Pick the ones your customers use: a builder is usually on LinkedIn and Facebook, a restaurant on Instagram. Start with two and add more if there is a reason to.
